PROTRANS BC is the private operator of the Canada Line, a 19-km automated rail-based rapid transit system connecting Downtown Vancouver with central Richmond and the Vancouver International Airport. Located in Richmond, we are a part of the PROTRANS family of SNC-Lavalin O&M, a global solutions provider to facility and asset operations.
The Guideway Technician is responsible for the inspection and repair of Canada Line rail track, special track work, switch machines, structures, power rail, drainage, walkways, fencing, electrical distribution, electrical equipment, electrical devices, mechanical equipment, pumps, and control devices to ensure a safe and reliable operation.
DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Works independently or under the direction of the Guideway Supervisor to complete scheduled or unscheduled maintenance tasks on the guideway.
Inspection, maintenance and repair of yard and mainline track, turnouts, expansion joints, switches, switch machines, restraining rails and all other related components.
Inspection, maintenance and repair of traction power supply and distribution systems including all electrical and mechanical equipment, devices, and controls.
Inspection, maintenance and repair of propulsion rail.
Inspection, maintenance and repair of guideway structure, drainage, walkways and fences.
Implements work permits, clearances, undertakes maintenance and repair work on the guideway and returns assets in a fit condition for operation.
Performs the duties of a Person In Charge (PIC) of work zone clearances and issues secondary’s as required.
Completes records of inspections and completed works and enters all required data into Asset Management System.
Makes recommendations for equipment and procedural changes to improve the performance of guideway assets.
Operates cranes and heavy rail maintenance equipment, including driving the maintenance rail vehicle following appropriate rules and procedures. Conducts maintenance to equipment/vehicles to ensure reliability.
Undertakes hand grinding to frogs, switches and sliding rail expansion joints.
Cut, drill and prepare rail for rail plugs and install as required.
Signs off work as complete and in compliance with standards.
Handles emergencies and failures in accordance with established procedures through immediate response and quick action.
Assists with clearing tracks during severe weather or intrusion on to the track.
Equipment failures or emergencies.
High school graduation or equivalent.
Journeyman trade certificate or recognized equivalent in an electrical or mechanical trade preferred.
Minimum of four years experience in inspecting, maintaining, and repairing railway track and special track work and/or four years maintaining electrical power supply and distribution equipment. Experience in electrical, mechanical or structural industrial environments is an asset.
Must be capable of working outside in all weathers to ensure scheduled work is completed to enable the guideway to be returned to operation.
Capable of interpreting the measurements from automated track monitoring devices and other specialized diagnostic and measurement equipment and reporting results for review by the Guideway Supervisor, Wayside Manager, or an engineer.
Valid unrestricted class 5 BC driver’s license.
Track Inspection from a Recognized Institution would be an asset.
Hourly Rate of Pay: $37.61
